PERFECTIONISM - A Real-World Identity Crisis

Perfectionism is present in everything we do and how we spend our time. Perfectionism in the world today is on a path of inclination because the ways in which things operate, or those things operated by a person are moving at a faster speed to include our daily living being on a fast track too.

By general definition, perfection is a condition, state of mind, or quality; Hence, where one feels they are not perfect or behaving perfectly [defined as imperfection], could relate to being flawed.

For example, in the workplace, employees working in demanding environments must manage details quickly and with flawless appeal and zest and sometimes on a competitive level with other coworkers. When these individuals are not operating to expected capacity, they may become lethargic to the negative impact presented towards them to do better and be better; to get results and get them fast. There is so much one person can do without going into overload and blank out-giving in to the stressors of not being perfect for company demands.

Another example is in how we spend our time. I have witnessed people spending their time multi-tasking in hyper-speed-performing activities in short periods of time that not only uses the most optimum physical demands of the body but also the mental capacity as well. Think about people who always have their cell phones glued to them discussing things, texting things, even while driving, doing shopping, or cooking at home, hanging out with friends, and even during a time of relaxation that should be just for them. I am sure we have all fallen victim to this way of living. It appears that with some people…if they do not have the availability to handle things in this fashion, they break down mentally because this is a perfectionist situation that they may feel works best; again because of a conditioning effect (because it just must work that way or no way). In other words, they cannot see this type of behaviour as acting perfect because that’s how people are doing things nowadays.

As an employer managing employees who work for your establishment what can you do to lower the expected perfections that you may be directly or indirectly placing on them? For individuals, what can you do to lower self-induced and socially connotative perfections? We live in a world where perfectionism lives, breathes, and breeds. Most people do not know how to live any differently because they have become so conditioned to this type of liveable behaviour that it has become a standard in society. The fight to be better than the next and the next one after that. It is time for all of us to put down the sword of perfectionism.

From the contents of this blog, realize that perfectionism attaches itself to so many things concerning humanity and it goes much deeper than what I have touched on in this blog. We have all been there including myself. But at a point, we must reconfigure the matrix and design it to be a healthier style to living and communicating. Make it a beneficial solution not a crisis outcry.
